SMS RENTS BACK ON THE ROAD FOR QUEBEC’S “RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER”
The bicycle ride from Montreal to Quebec City will be the same as last year’s but, for Nicolas Gagnon, the drive will be a little harder.
Nic, the Quebec Regional Manager for SMS Rents, will rejoin his teammates on ÉQUIPEMENT SMS to make the 300 km ride to raise funds to combat cancer. Last year, Nic surpassed his goal of personally raising at least $2,500 by more than 40%. In response, Nic has set his sights higher for the 2011 ride, aiming for a minimum of $4,200 in sponsorships.
The third annual “Ride To Conquer Cancer” will take place through the weekend of July 9-10, with up to 1,500 participants cycling through 150 km of Quebec countryside each day. In its first two years, the ride has succeeded in raising nearly $12,000,000 for the Segal Cancer Centre of the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, as well as other cancer centres throughout the Province. Funds are distributed to several programs supporting breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care.
Nic’s team, ÉQUIPEMENT SMS, has grown from just 8 members last year to 18 in 2011, with Alain Bedard as Captain. Organizers of the ride ask each team member to collect pledges for at least $2,500. ÉQUIPEMENT SMS, has set $45,000 as the team target for this year. The team began training indoors in February. The late arrival of Spring weather delayed the team’s move to actual road training, but Nic remains confident that they will be in good shape for July.
According to Nic, the “RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER” has also continued to grow in its celebrity support. Patrick Carpentier, the popular Quebec racing driver, will once again train and ride with ÉQUIPEMENT SMS. Among this year’s rookie riders will be Guy Carbonneau, the former Stanley Cup winning star of the Montreal Canadiens.
