NORTH BAY, ONTARIO – The first “North Rocks The Bay” summer music festival was deemed a great success by organizers. And the SMS Rents store in North Bay agrees!
Store Manager Ken Fricker explains how the event was dreamed up by an independent concert promoter after North Bay City Council found it was unable to fund the night-time concert portion of its annual “Heritage Days” festival.
“When I heard about the idea in the news, I contacted the promoter to see if we could help. We were glad to pitch in.”
The event was staged over the August 1st long weekend, with a series of popular bands and performers appearing each evening. When the lights came on, it was thanks to Ken Fricker and his team.
“We donated all the light towers and the generators to run them. Our staff also donated their time to set up and tear down the equipment”, says Ken. Ken remained on the site all weekend to ensure everything went as planned.
In return, the promoter posted large stage banners front and centre throughout the festival. Each night featured a different style of music, covering Country, Rock and Top 40, to ensure a broad appeal to the people of North Bay and beyond. Headliners featured top acts such as Blue Rodeo, Colin James and Hedley, plus popular performers from the area like Doc Walker and Alex J. Robinson, as well as blues festival favorites including Dave Rotundo and David Wilcox. The promoter, Symphony of Sound Entertainment Inc., is based in Hamilton, Ontario, and is also managing several other tours and festivals in northern Ontario.
Despite a wet and rainy weekend, about 5,000 music lovers attended each night, many of them out-of-town visitors.
According to Ken, the city’s response to the effort has been very gratifying. “The appreciation we have been shown is fabulous!” Ken claims. “The on-stage hosts thanked us at every concert, and we even got mentions in the news media. Customers in the store and on the telephone have also commented on seeing us at the festival. So we feel that our store is really being recognized as an active part of our community.”
Plans are going ahead now with great expectations to repeat the success next summer.
