SMS Rents was recently invited to take part in an exciting new education initiative centred at Meadowvale Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario.
Seventeen Meadowvale students undertook a major renovation project at the new site of Cairn Control Systems Inc., turning a 3000 sq. ft. warehouse into offices, reception and stockroom areas.
The students are all enrolled in Meadowvale’s “Specialist High Skills - Major Construction” Program, an alternative to standard high school programs that lets students graduate through hands-on experiences in industry and trade skills. Paul Taylor, a Meadowvale teacher, provided instruction and supervision as the class completed framing, drywalling and installation of doors, windows, electrical lines and plumbing. Through a personal contact at SMS Rents, the school requested a trainer to teach the students proper operation of an aerial lift.
David Lorini, of the SMS Rents store in Mississauga, spent a day on the worksite with the students. David presented the students with our standard 5-part training program, combining classroom instruction with hands-on sessions using a Skyjack Scissor Lift. Each student received a total of 6 hours of training on the lift. At the end of the day, all 17 students received workplace certification in aerial lift safety and operation.
Cairn Control Systems became involved in the program four years ago when the owners’ daughter enrolled in the construction specialty. Typically, students are assigned as interns to various trades companies and businesses as assistants to their skilled workers. This year, the school had planned to involve its students in a Habitat for Humanity project. When that venture was unable to proceed, Cairn Control Systems offered to provide the space and materials for their new facility. The company sells and installs home automation and home security systems.
At an open house showcasing the work in progress, Carol Cairns of Cairn Control Systems announced that her firm has hired two of the students to continue work on the facility through the summer.
When the project is complete, the students will not only have their credits toward a high school diploma, they will have a valid lift operator’s certificate to add to their resume for any industrial or construction job application.
Meadowvale is just one of the schools in the Peel District School Board to offer Specialist High Skills programs with majors in such areas as health, hospitality, environment and communications. Similar programs are offered by school boards throughout the Province.
